Industrial Energy Management: 3M’s Energy Management Toolbox
Energy efficiency drives sustainable manufacturing at 3M. In 2015, 3M made it a corporate goal to increase energy efficiency indexed to net sales by 30% over ten years. 3M expanded their goals by pledging to source 100% of electricity through renewables by 2050 (joining the international initiative, RE100) and most recently, announcing to be carbon neutral by 2050.
Over the last four decades, 3M’s energy management approach has drastically improved. Today, 3M’s corporate energy management strategy is backed by a robust toolbox of energy tracking and reporting tools, ISO 50001 and SEP 50001 energy management systems (40+ global sites certified), energy training programs, and the newly released Manual for Energy Design Requirements and Guidelines. The energy management system also adapts to changes in manufacturing, like the move to a digital shopfloor, and the regulatory changes seen throughout the pandemic.
The people at 3M drive sustainable manufacturing. Part of the energy management program is to enable and invigorate 3Mers through employee excellence recognition, monthly energy web conferences and quarterly newsletters. The corporate energy management team and the global area energy managers helps standardize best practices and better the system.
