Presentation Title:

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS): Design Fundamentals to Field Deployment

Track C- Decarbonization and Electrification Strategies

Session C2: Recharging the Future: Innovations in EVs and Energy Storage Solutions

Day 2  9:30 am

Speaker(s):

Abstract:

Introduce battery energy storage system (BESS) design process and cover related challenges. Starting with battery string design and how it relates to the inverter. Additionally cover some basics on battery chemistry and the selection of battery chemistry especially when it comes to the application and adoption of the newer chemistries (performance, safety, etc.). Touch on the difference between a power versus an energy battery. The initial tutorial, in summary, provides a concrete set of BESS design/implementation steps that make the multiple other topics areas of the conference relevant to the daily work of BESS engineers and AHJ’s attending the conference. Continue the discussion by embracing the sometimes confusing regulatory and safety (standard) landscape and sharing an easy-to-follow rubric that eliminates confusion. Complete the discussion by pulling in recent developments in the industry involving BESS crossover applications and digital twinning. These two topics are on everyone’s minds but are rarely discussed in the context of a design process and much less by the same speaker. One crossover topic can be phrased in the form of a question, “Is a UPS a BESS or is A BESS an UPS? How does one incorporate digital twinning into the design process, what are the limitations of digital twins, and what the benefits of digital twinning?
