Abstract:

With so many fires in California, many critical healthcare facilities are evacuated due to electric grid shutdown during these times. We designed a microgrid power plant that would provide all the power and entire load to the facility even when the electric grid is down. Our microgrid had to be tested with an 8.0 earthquake and hurricane winds up to 150 mph to qualify for the required OSP certification for healthcare facilities for life safety. It is the only one in the US that has this certification. In addition, it saves the facility up to 96% of the costs of electricity and up to 50% of the costs of natural gas from the grid. The system qualifies for Federal subsidies and pays for itself in 4 to 6 years.
