Thinking Outside the Box: A Case Study in Retro-Commissioning
This presentation will highlight a case study of a retro-commissioning (RCx) project which redesigned the building HVAC system to match the reduced cooling loads of the building as a result of LED upgrades and reduced/hybrid workforce. We will discuss the importance of considering additional energy reduction strategies that fall outside of the typical measures implemented during an RCx project that have a high potential for overall energy reduction as buildings are upgraded and in-person workforces continue to change. A case study of an RCx project will review an in depth of analysis of modifications made to the BAS and HVAC system of a building that has shifted in use and undergone several upgrades that allowed the study team to analyze and re-engineer the facility to meet the needs and loads of its current use. This process is adaptable for similar buildings and other instances where the original design of the HVAC system no longer meets the current facility requirements.
