The Next Hyper EE Opportunity: Mechanical Rooms, Data Processing & Heat Reuse with Immersion Cooled IT
The rapid growth of AI, blockchain technologies and powerful processors is generating tons of low quality heat that legacy air-cooled systems wastefully reject to the atmosphere.
Small, immersion-cooled IT systems can operate as efficiently as hyperscalers — and even better when their high quality waste heat (55-60°C, liquid-borne) can be reused to provide free hot water, building or process heat. The energy savings and decarbonization are accomplished by using a cooling medium that is >1000x more effective than ‘conditioned air’, plus simple heat exchangers. Combined, such systems can enable Heat Recovery Efficiencies of up to 95%, as per an extensive NREL study.
This presentation will provide an overview of the types of IT cooling, including two key drivers behind air’s diminishing role as the default medium. It will also introduce attendees to the standard IT efficiency metric, Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), and the need to account for board fan energy to accurately compare air and liquid cooling methods.
For energy managers, building owners & designers, and HVAC & IT professionals, is there a larger, more sustainable opportunity on the horizon? You decide. For Mother Earth and the next generation.
